AHW 2025 Program
Please join us for an enjoyable walk on the first Sunday of the month. We meet at CIBO cafe, 199 Hutt Street, Adelaide from 9:30am. For Saturday walks we meet on location as listed below. For more information on a particular walk, please contact its listed walk leader. And, don't forget to see our walker's check-list at the bottom of this page.
Walk gradings:
- Very easy: Social event. No walking involved.
- Easy: Flat landscape. Suitable for all levels of fittness.
- Medium: Some challenging slopes or uneven land, but we pause the walk to stay as a group.
- Hard: Includes steep inclines and/or undulating land for much of the walk!

- Up the Creek Backwards Walk: From modern technology to the historic village of Marion and then to the indigenous dreamtime campsite.
- When: Sun 4 May
- Meet: (as usual) CIBO Cafe, 199 Hutt St, Adelaide, 9:30 am for 10:00 am car-pool to location.
- Meet there: Oaklands Reserve carpark 10:30 am (turn off Oaklands Road at the Hendrie Street lights, drive to the far end).

- Event description: (In Brief) We walk to the historic village of Marion, have lunch and continue to the Warriparinga indigenous campsite ('a lovely, special area'). On the way back to the cars we can stop at the Village museum.
- (In detail) (1) At 10:30 we walk around the modern wetlands and the site of the historic Homestead, then continue for 30 minutes along Sturt Creek to the historic village of Marion and inspect some of the highlights of the village (with a commentary on the history). (2) Picnic Lunch in the George Street Reserve (There is a coffee shop and snacks available close by, but a packed lunch is suggested). (3) Following lunch, we will continue along the Sturt Creek for a 20 minute walk up to Warraparinga at Darlington to the indigenous campsite; (4) visit the Marion Village Museum which will be open for a free visit. We will then return to the car park at Oaklands Reserve, following the Sturt Creek, taking roughly 25 minutes. (We should be finished by approx 2 pm).

- Cost: $60 per person
- Event Description: We have special access to 'Ray's Beach House' Preview accommodation. It's right on the seafront, with both upstairs and downstairs accommodation. Up top is the main open plan living area with 360 degree views. There is a fully equipped kitchen, which we will use Friday night or you can get takeout nearby. Saturday night we dine, by tradition at the Elliott hotel. Daytime activities include sightseeing at nearby Victor Harbour, Port Elliott or Goowla.

- O'Sullivans Beach to Port Norlunga Walk
- When: Sun 1 June
- Meet: (as usual) CIBO Cafe, 199 Hutt St, Adelaide, 9:30 am for 10:00 am car-pool to location.
- Meet there: 10:30 am At the shelter corner of Baden St and Mentone Parade O'Sullivans Beach.
- Event description: Mervs walk will be (one-way) from O'Sullivan's Beach to Port Norlunga 6kms. The start of the walk is at the shelter corner of Baden St and Mentone Parade O'Sullivans Beach. Owners of cars will drive their cars from the starting point (above) to the end of the walk at Port Norlunga and park at Beck's Bakehouse at Salt Fleet Street. From there they will be shuttled back to the start point. We should walk to the end point in 2 hours for lunch at Beck's Bakehouse, which has a variety of food or there is a fish and chip shop nearby.

- Chambers Gully Park, Sugarloaf Walk
- Meet: 199 Hutt St, Adelaide, CIBO Cafe 9:30 am for 10:00 am car-pool to location
- Meet there: 10:30 am Chambers Gully Carpark, which is off Waterfall Gully Rd

- Event description: This walk is at Chambers Gully Park on the Burnside quarry track , including a bit of the Sugarloaf walk.

- Grade: Low to medium difficulty with only moderate incline and lots of flat areas. duration: around 1 hour , returning to the same car park.
- As its a short walk, lunch will follow at the nearby Ballaboosta cafe, but to ensure your seat, please let Ian know if you want to join us there; i.e. RSVP him at auscot@hotmail.co.uk

- Mt Barker: Laratinga wet lands trail
- Meet: 199 Hutt St, Adelaide, CIBO Cafe 9:30 am for 10:00 am car-pool to location
- Meet there: 10:45 am BALD HILL ROAD entrance where adequate car parking is available. Google Maps link
- Event description: The walk will entail a three to four km stroll around and through the wetlands. This would take at least an hour and possibly two depending on how often people stop to check out the bird life. There are plenty of seats available throughout the park and a toilet and shelter stop is close to the car park entrance.
- See photo's & map in below silder. Peter and Wayne have included a photo of some of the birds that can be spotted. 'We recently did it and saw lots of beautiful blue superb wrens'.
- Following the walk we will lunch at Newnham, Kitchen Farm Pantry, for coffee and or lunch. There is indoor and outdoor available at this delightful little cafe.

- We will walk around Port Adelaide looking especially at the many murals on walls.
- Then we'll return to the Church for afternoon tea at about 3.30pm. (The Church is very close to the new Port Dock railway station).

2. Walker's Check-list
2.1 Where we meet:
- Saturday walks: We meet at the location of the walk
- Sunday walks: We meet prior to the walk at 9:30 am; CIBO Cafe, Hutt St.
- Please note: Walk details and dates are subject to change. You can keep up-to-date by checking the website as well as by contacting the group leader listed for that particular walk. Walkers participate at their own risk - see below for full disclaimer.
2.2 Bring water:
Shops often aren't available, so bring your own food and drink, unless specifically stated otherwise. Plenty of water should be carried with you on the hike (regardless).
2.3.Check the forcast
Please check the weather report for the day and wear clothes suitable to the climate.
2.4 Dress
- Again, Wear clothes suitable to the climate.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes, socks, rain gear and/or other clothing suited to the environment (e.g., jeans or long pants may be suited to bush walks to protect your legs, but shorts may be more suitable for walks in the city parklands).
- Wear Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (as required)
- Carry personal first aid kit, etc (optional only)
3. Fees
3.1 Carpooling expenses:
In most instances it makes sense for us to carpool to our walks, both in terms of the environment and sociality. To make this work the nominated driver will set a reasonable contribution for passengers will provide towards their running costs.
3.2 Membership fee:
Our membership fee is $20. This covers Public Liability & Walking SA membership. First time walkers, however, will be included as guests. See Q & A page for details

Walkers participate in the walks on the basis that they are responsible for their own actions and decisions. The Happy Wanderers are not responsible for the condition of the trail, weather or wild life and cannot be held responsible for any accidents or events that may injure/damage walkers or their property.
